In forums and concerts, the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts next week celebrates Blue Note jazz, Martin Luther King and the music of the civil rights movement.

The forums are free and open to the public, while tickets are required for the concerts.

BLUE NOTE RECORDS 70TH ANNIVERSARY—ON TOUR

Virtually all the jazz greats performed on this label from its founding in 1939 to the 1960s. Now, an all-star septet is on your in celebration of the label’s 70th anniversary.

The tour stops at the Mondavi Center on Jan. 13, with a concert set for 8 p.m. in Jackson Hall.

The musicians: Bill Charlap, piano; Nicholas Payton, trumpet; Peter Bernstein, guitar; Ravi Coltrane, tenor and soprano saxophone; Steve Wilson, alto sax; Peter Washington, bass; and Lewis Nash, drums.

A Forum@MC is scheduled for 5 p.m. the same day in the Studio Theatre, on the topic: “History in Blue: The Life and Times of Blue Note Records.” The participants: Coltrane; Peter Williams, artistic director of Yoshi’s Jazz Club; and Gary Vercelli, jazz music director at Sacramento radio statio KXJZ.

MLK, CIVIL RIGHTS AND MAVIS STAPLES

Soul and gospel legend Mavis Staples is visiting �����о��� on Jan. 14, the eve of King’s birthday, for a concert titled “We’ll Never Turn Back.” It is set for 8 p.m. in Jackson Hall.

At 5 p.m. in the Studio Theatre, Staples is scheduled to participate in a Forum@MC titled “Civil Rights: The Music and the Movement.” The panel also includes Milmon Harrison, professor of African American studies. (The Mondavi Center previously announced a different faculty participant.)
